As far as first seasons go, I thought Season 1 of The Mindy Project was relatively strong. Normally I have to trudge through the first season of a show before I am really hooked, but I have been intrigued by Mindy & Co. from episode 1 – I was shocked when I realized I was about to finish the season. Let’s take a look at what has happened to our characters between episodes 4-24 and what I believe are their best and worst moments:
Mindy – Mindy did end up going out with Josh the sports attorney and dating him for a while, but after discovering that he cheated on her, she ended their relationship. She does, however, meet up with him while he is in rehab towards the end of the season, where he confesses that he was addicted to cocaine and cheated on her multiple times throughout their relationship (yikes). She has a few casual dates/hookups with a couple of different men – including one of the male midwives from a rival practice – before settling into a routine with a minister named Casey. Mindy also recruits Danny to be her gynecologist, tries to “Pretty Woman” a male escort, takes part in a rap battle with her brother, and, at the season’s close, cuts off all her hair and agrees to go with Casey on a mission trip to Haiti.
Best S1 Moment: There are so many great Mindy moments (duh), but my favorite was her supporting Rishi (her brother) in his decision to become a rapper even though she does not agree with it at all
Worst S1 Moment: Hooking up with Brendan Deslaurier (the male midwife)
Danny – Danny inadvertently shows his hand when he is unable to complete Mindy’s gynecological exam because of personal feelings he may or may not have for her. Despite this, he continues to open up to Mindy and be a shoulder for her to cry on. Additionally, he engages in relationships with a woman with an eye patch, Mindy’s friend Alex, and, oddly enough, his ex-wife, Christina. He is initially reluctant to pursue a relationship with Christina but eventually asks her to coffee. They decide to give their relationship another shot as long as they take things slowly. Danny also gets his driver’s license and gets in a fight at a frat party after some punk college students punch Morgan.
Best S1 Moment: Sticking up for Morgan the frat party
Worst S1 Moment: Reconciling with his ex-wife
Jeremy – Jeremy continues to be a charming Brit throughout the season. He has a few romantic encounters, but none of them were significant enough for me to really remember them. We do get to see his sensitive side several times (which I really enjoyed – I like that he’s more than just a pretty face): once when he helps Danny get his driver’s license, once when he spends Thanksgiving with Betsy and her family, and when he apologizes to Morgan for being a jerk at a medical conference. We also get to see him grow from a sort of self-centered background player into a real leader at the practice after Dr. Schulman retires and leaves the practice to his associates.
Best S1 Moment: Comforting and spitting truth at Betsy over Thanksgiving
Worst S1 Moment: Embarrassing Morgan at the medical conference
Morgan – Morgan gets involved with so many shenanigans in S1 and I loved every minute of his screen time. He and Mindy develop a great friendship that I hope to see more of in future seasons. Even though he is fired from the practice when he mailed a private letter of Danny’s to Christina, his relationship with Danny begins to grow stronger after he carries Danny across the finish line at a triathlon, and after Danny sticks up for him during the fight at the frat party. His and Jeremy’s relationship is tested at the medical conference in Santa Fe after Jeremy embarrasses Morgan in front of a bunch of doctors. Jeremy feels terrible and spends the afternoon apologizing to Morgan at a Navajo sweat lodge. Morgan, of course, forgives Jeremy and agrees to help him with his presentation at the conference. But things go awry because it turns out they are both severely dehydrated from their afternoon sweat session. All is well, though – the two of them bond over the experience and emerge better friends.
Best S1 Moment: Carrying Danny across the finish line at the triathlon
Worst S1 Moment: Mailing Danny’s hidden letter to Christina
We also get some glimpses into the lives of the supporting characters – we meet Betsy’s family and learn that she has Bible study at her apartment every Saturday with a rag-tag crew, and we get to know Gwen’s husband and daughter better before her character sort of disappears into oblivion. Gwen is not the only one whose absence is unexplained – Shauna’s character mysteriously vanishes after the first few episodes, as well. She seems to be replaced by Tamra (a new nurse) and the return of Beverly (the gross nurse from ep. 2 – this time she is hired as a secretary).
I was actually very surprised that Danny and Mindy did not end up together in some capacity by the end of the season, even though we know that Danny is harboring some semblance of romantic feelings for Mindy. But there are so many “moments” between the two of them that a coupling is inevitable – I now assume it will be by the end of Season 2.
Like I said, I thought this was a pretty strong first season for a show. On top of the good storylines, character development, etc, the guest stars were especially top-notch:
- Anna Camp
- Bill Hader
- Anders Holm
- Ellie Kemper
- Seth Meyers
- Randall Park
- Jordan Peele
- Francia Raisa
- Chloë Sevigny
- Stephen Tobolowsky
With a star-studded list like that from the get-go, it can only get better from here – I’m really looking forward to see who comes next!
I’m excited to see how all these characters develop and interact in Season 2 and what awesome people they tap to guest star. Be on the lookout for my recaps of S2-S4 – coming soon!
