Stranger Things “Pilot” Recap

Hey guys, I decided to try out a new show called Stranger Things. I had heard some good things about it and have had it recommended to me by a friend who said it was really good. I am usually quite hesitant about starting new shows;  it takes me a little while to get into them and usually something big and exciting has to happen in the first episode to keep me watching. Well, with this show, it was no problem!

On his was home from a 10 hour game night with his friends (yes, 10 hours!) Will is chased by an unseen creature who attacked a scientist as the premiere scene of the show. He manages to get away on his bike back to his house but neither his mother Joyce (Winona Ryder), nor his older brother, Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) are there to save him. He does what he can to escape but after witnessing the creature come to the window he runs out back to the shed, he gets far enough to load the families rifle and point it towards the door, but the lights go out and when they come back on Will is gone. We do not know if he is dead or alive, what the monster looks or even why it wanted Will in the first place.

Joyce and Jonathon are suitably frantic about Will missing but this is overshadowed by their guilt. Joyce is a single mother who works long hours to take care of her family as the boy’s father is a deadbeat, she is at work at the time thinking that Jonathon is home to watch Will, but Jonathon decided to take a shift to help his mother so he to was working. This is probably not the first time Will has been left alone ,as he seems like a pretty on to it kid. He is very smart and independent, like he could take care of himself and that a parent would leave at home alone and be okay with that. Unfortunately, this time it was not okay. It is not Joyce’s fault that Will is gone but she feels so guilty for it and it is so heartbreaking to watch her suffer with the thought that she may never see her baby again. Upon learning that Will is missing, his friends Mike, Dustin, and Lucas go out and try to find him, instead they come across a shaven head girl who seems to be on the run from something unknown.

There is also a creepy doctor. Not much is known yet of Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine), the seemingly nefarious man who runs the Hawkins National Laboratory. However, the mission to track down a powerful girl who’s escaped from the facility has already led his people to shoot a Good Samaritan point-blank in the head. So my guess is he is dodgy, evil and up to no good!

I am excited to see whatever this creature is. I get a very alien feel from it and whatever it is, it’s big, spooky, and makes some pretty nightmare fueling sounds.

Stranger Things is an American science fiction horror web television series available on Netflix and is  currently on Season 1. The plot follows the disappearance of a young boy, and a telekinetic girl who helps his friends in their search, while the boy’s older brother and the town police chief start their own investigations.

The show is set in 1980’s Indiana and is a homage to ’80s pop culture, channeling the works of Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, Stephen King, and George Lucas, among others.

The acting from the kids in the show is incredible, they are a talented little bunch and have a few funny moments. I was excited to see Winona Ryder in this one as I have liked her since Edward Scissorhands, and just in the first episode I was gripped by her, she is so believable that you really feel like this is happening to her.

Cool points:

  • The monster makes a spooky clicking sound right before it attacks
  • Awesome old school music
  • Joyce surprises Will with cinema tickets to Poltergeist a ’80s classic (Yes please!) as long as it wont keep him up for weeks and he won’t get scared by clowns!
  • Will has an awesome club house which of course has a unique made up secret code word to enter

So what’s too expect with Stranger Things? Well, if the rest of the series is as promising and exciting as this first episode was, we are in for a spooky, exciting, sometimes funny, heart stopping show, and I for one can not wait to see how this all unfolds!

Thank you guys for reading and if you have checked it out, let me know what you think!
