I went into Speechless with high hopes because I love Minnie Driver and her previous show, About A Boy. My hopes were not disappointed. The premier episode of Speechless was full of laughter. The show introduced us to two parents with three kids, one of which has cerebral palsy. We meet Maya (Minnie Driver), who is the no-holds-bar, extremely protective mother… at least when it comes to her son JJ (Micah Fowler), the one with cerebral palsy. That’s how her youngest son Ray (Mason Cook) sees it. He’s so used to having to keep moving in order to find the perfect school for his brother. He feels that his mom is mostly concerned about what JJ wants and needs, not what anyone else wants or needs. Then we have the dad, Jimmy (John Ross Bowie), who tries to see both sides, and Dylan (Kyla Kenedy), a spunky girl who has a love for running track.
To be completely honest, I saw a lot of my own family in the Dimeo family. My sister is disabled (not quite like JJ), and I have been in Ray’s shoes; feeling like my sister’s wants and needs are more important than anyone else’s. My mom is a lot like Maya in being no-holds-bar and crazy protective. She does everything out of love though, like Maya.
Overall, I found the episode extremely funny and relatable. I definitely plan on continue watching it, and I think others will enjoy it as well.
Speechless airs Wednesday nights at 8:30/7:30c on ABC.
